What can I give my pug for joint pain?
Are there any over the counter medications that I can give my aging pug for arthritis and joint pain? Is it ok to give him Ibuprofen? He weighs almost 40 pounds. Thanks!
My American Bulldog has joint pain in his shoulder, he developed it at 6 months and has been on Dasuquin ever since. It is the top of the line joint medicine and really seems to be helping him, your Vet can give it to you. Also, if he is in pain over it tell your vet to give him Rimadyl, this is a pain reliever for dogs as well. My boy does great with both these med's and I wouldn't try anything else. Also, Pedigree dog food has NOTHING to do with joint pain!! My dog developed this condition because he grew so fast that the shoulder ligaments didn't have time to grow fast enough with him- not because of the dog food he ate!!! People are so ignorant sometimes, I swear! I even asked the vet if it was something I did wrong like feed him the wrong food and she said absolutely not, it's just common in large breed dogs.
No, don't give your dog any over the counter medication. If your dog is really suffering from arthritis then go see your vet. They will prescribe a drug to realive the pain. Don't play doctor with your dog.

Yes but give him baby ASA for pain..
Ibuprofen can cause kidney failure in dogs..
And go to wal-mart and buy some glucosamine for his joints..

Everyday feed your food which is healthy for it.Give Pedigree( Dog food) and some milk so that it's bones become strong and she will not have pain!

Go to your local pet store and buy him Hip & Joint Formula Dog Food Supplement or anything that you could give him that helps joint pain.

Please don't feed your dog milk or cheap pedigree dog food! If you don't want to take him to the vet, which is what you should do, you can give him a buffered aspirin everyday. He really should be on rimadyl or something similar.
EDIT: Buffered aspirin is fine for dogs, ask a vet! Science diet is a totally worthless food! First ingredient is corn, second is a meat by product! Light formula contains peanut hulls!!! Would you eat peanut hulls??

A pug that weighs 40 lbs?! I hope you have him on a plan to shed those extra pounds, I'm sure being that overweight is not helping his joint pain, and could quite possibly be the cause of it.
Call your vet. I would not give my dog any over the counter meds unless first consulting their vet. They know your dog and its history.
Like another mentioned, you can give glucosamine supplements to help aid in keeping joints healthy, but that will not relieve pain.

Please don't give your dog ibuprofen, aspirin, food with milk, calcium supplements, childrens medicines etc. It is in most circumstances not okay. Most non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are toxic if not given in the correct dosage, and unpleasant side effects do occur if not given by the correct method. A paediatric medicine may sound safe, but is not necessarily so, as the doses for humans and animals of the same medications are usually radically different, and some animals are completely without the enzymes to deal with some drugs. Calcium supplements are of little use as calcium absorption takes place during the early stages of life, calcium loading now will be ineffective and human medicines to boost calcium uptake in the elderly are dangerous for animals.
It's not all OTC medication but I would reccommend you think about-
- weight loss
- Glucosamine and chondroitin supplementation
- cod liver oil
- A specialist joint diet e.g. Hills J/D light (I don't know the Royal Canin Waltham equivalent yet)
Your pugs ideal weight is 6.3-8.1 kgs (14-18 lbs). Carrying such a large amount of excess weight is putting pressure on his joints, his heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and he really needs to go on a good diet and exercise regime. This will be of huge benefit to him. Your vets will have some good diets e.g. three step Hills r/d, w/d, light diet plan, and there are some good quality non-veterinary weight control diets- I am particularly impressed with the Purina one for dogs. Hopefully your vets runs a good weight clinic, where the nurses can support you.
There are some good supplements for arthritic conditions- it is best to see your vet even if you obtain your supplements from a health food shop, as they can advise you on dosage, and changing the dosage to suit your pugs ongoing condition (and hopefully lower weight).
Your vet may also want to prescribe or reccommend a pain relief regime, and this should be regularly monitored by your vet as the anti-inflammatories suitable for dogs can have side-effects.
