what can i give my dog for arthritis pain?
My dog appears to be moving slowly this winter. I am suspecting arthritis despite his age of 4 years old.
4 years is very young for arthritis. It may be an injury. I’d go to a vet before trying any medication.

well my brothers dog is a wrotwiler and they always have arthritis pain he gave her half a tyllenol and kept her of her leg for a while

Furbratz is 100% right and TM is very wrong. Tylenol is toxic to dogs!!!

I wouldn’t have thought it would be arthritis at only 4 years of age. Try some paracaetamol – half if it’s a small dog and a full one if medium to large. It’s quite safe (paracaetamol only though) and see if things improve. Could just be a bit of a strain. Some dogs have a problem with freezing pads too when the weather is so cold – could be that?

If your dog does have arthritis you will want to get a proper diagnosis and medication from the vet. Human pain medications aften create worse problems for dogs such as creating stomach ulcers. You can reduce the effects of arthritis by warming the joints. If you typically shave the dog let the hair grow, use a sweater or blanket to keep the dog warm, and if the pain gets really bad then alternate hot and cold compresses a few times a day to relaxe the muscles and reduce inflamation.

I would take him to see a vet to get a true diagnosis. We used to put Cider Apple Vinegar in the horses feed to aid arthritis.

I would definitely ask your vet to check him out. It could be something other than arthritis.
If it turns out to be arthritis, you could try "Synovi G3" chews. They really transformed by older dog who was slowing down a bit. She is very spunky now and seems much more comfortable going up stairs.
But first, ask your vet to check him out. 4 is pretty darn young for arthritis.

give him one cod liver oil capsule everyday with his food, but i doubt it is arthritis as he is very young. My dog is on metacam but she is 12.see your vet soon.

Just plain baby aspirin . that is what my vet recommended when my daschund hurt her back . Give 2 aspirin every 6 hours until you can see improvement

add a few teaspoons of oil to his food, depending on his size, cod liver or sunflower, it will help with his joints, and always check with the vet before you give him painkillers, the wrong dose can do more harm than good

This sounds like a cold chill, where the dog goes out for a walk in the cold winter air and gets chilled through his joints. Its a common problem in large dogs and pure breeds. Four year old is around the age when it starts to show because the dog has finished growing and all energy is put into maintaining the body as opposed to growing.
If the dog gets wet while out on a walk, with the cold air, it makes the joints stiff and painful and makes walking a bit difficult.
The best course of action, is to provide a joint supplement, as long term, the problem will not effect the dog. It just reaccurs every winter when the temperatures start to drop again. By all means have the dog checked out by a vet to make sure theres nothing underlying which may be causing the problem, such as slipping on ice which might cause a strain or a pulled muscle.
The problem is that if the vet can’t find a specific problem, they may prescribe a long term course of painkillers which mask the pain, are expensive, and are difficult to administer to the dog.
One or two things you could try are a joint supplement such as cold liver oil mixed in with the food or like what I do with my now senior dog, is to mix a tin of sardines in olive oil in with her dry food twice a week which not only helps her joints and makes her easier on her joints, but also helps to make her coat more glossy.

You absolutely need to see your vet. It could be a lot of things.
Pain meds for arthritis are available, and you can supplement with over-the-counter glycosamine tablets. As far as prescriptions go, if you’re in the US you’ll likely get Rimadyl (carprofen) in tablets or Metacam liquid.
Get to your vet.

Did you take him to the vet? He’s kind of young to have arthritis.

You should really go and talk to a vet before you give your dog any meds! It may not be arthritis pain there might be some kind of other injury. And if it is arthritis pain then your vet can tell you what meds would be best for your dog and how much he will need.

No Metacam as it is only good for short term use, no asprin or paracetamol, all three items can cause internal bleeding in dogs over a period of time.
Cosequin as recommended by vets is the best as he will possibly need it long term. (I used the DS capsule on my dog from 6 years of age until she was 14)

Rimadyl is from the same family as Metacam, and not suitable for long term use.

my friends dog had surgery on his leg and ever since she has been giving him glucosimine and contridite ask your pharmacy for the powered type and put a small amount in his food every day after a few weeks you will start to see a difference and you must continue with the treatment for it to work just like a daily supplement
References :
Pick up some Glucosamine, or Condroitin from your local Holland and Barrett or health food store. These are a good supplement to give your dog.Our vet recommended this for our German Pointer when arthritis set in…and it really does help, though don’t expect it to work overnight…it takes a while for them to work in the dogs system. also, introduce oily fish into his diet, maybe two or three times a week. If he’s not keen on this, then just a spoonful of cod-liverpoil in his feed on a daily basis is just as good. He’s very young though to have arthritis! Is he a large breed? this could possibly explain it. Before you do anything, you should check things out with the vet to check that there is no underlying problem.

Dont self medicate your animals please take him to the vets paracetemol or asprin are NOT safe to give ive treated dogs who have had paracetemol poisoning not good, it is possible for a four year old dog to show signs of mild arthritis depending on the breed as some are more susceptible but thats for your vet to decide. "paracetemol" oh my god!

Firstly I would get him to a vet for a check over. If it is Arthritis, our dog started to get stiff when she was about 10.. I started to give her 1 cod liver oil capsule a day. Also started her on Glucosomine and Crondroitin which you can get for pets. I also bought her a magnetic collar. I noticed a difference in a few weeks.

Take him to the vet and get it an x-ray to check it is arthritis. If it is the vet will recommend an anti inflammatory medication. My old dog took Metacalm for years for arthritis in her spine and it really helped.
